We’re in the thick of Summer break here. The days are long and hot. The air is so humid and sticky you can see it. The kids are ferrel. Mama’s head is spinning at all the messes and sounds happening at one time on top of having my full-time job and 100 hobbies.
I can’t remember if I wrote about the chicken coop we are building last time or not. We’ve been working on it any chance we get for about three months now. I haven’t been painting much on paper, but rather on my coop. Of course I painted a cute little quilt block on a side door. We are very exited to have finally moved in four chicks this past weekend!
So kinda big (for me) announcement: For a while now I’ve been working on something I’m really excited about. From ideas in my sketchbook to Illustrator and in my hands soon enough. I designed four little woven labels for my sewing friends to put in their garments. (I’ll save a couple for me too.) My head is spinning with all the ideas I have for more sewing related things, but I’m always scared other people won’t think they’re as cool as I do. I’ll set you Butterbean readers up with a discount code as soon as they are up. There’s only a handful of you here, but I’m glad someone is out there reading this. Navigating a new small business venture is so overwhelming and frustrating sometimes because of all the legal stuff, but also all the ideas I have and not being able to do them right away because funds don’t exist. Hopefully, I can just do one idea at a time until I feel better about taking bigger risks. I’m just glad that because of the work I do for my job that I know how to set up a Shopify store and make it exactly the way I want it to. Maybe the legal/tax stuff will become less confusing overtime. So for right now, I see my Cotton and Ochre store offering my sewing labels, original art and prints, fat-quarters (for now) of hand-painted fabric, and maybe some small quilted pieces if I can let go of them.
I’ve been working on a cute Summer dress ( I just finished, but haven’t taken any good photos yet. ) made with some fabric I got out of my Grandma’s sewing room. This print is so amazing. I used the Ogden Cami as the bodice and hacked it very slightly to get a wider shoulder strap so I could sew a dainty lil ruffle on it. I added side ties to bring the waist in and two skirt tiers. I feel really good in this thing. When I was making my dress, I took plenty of breaks to walk in my little garden.
The flowers are in full bloom. I’m so excited about my purple coneflowers and daisies that finally bloomed this year. The zinnias are beautiful. Petunias are going wild. I got a few good harvests of cherry tomatoes. The chicory is going to steal the show soon and I’m very patiently waiting for that show of brightest blue. I have several sweet potatoes plants vining, so fingers crossed I get some potatoes bigger than a spool of thread this year. The sunflowers are tall, but not as tall as they could’ve been. I just couldn’t keep the weeds down and they took over a bit. I keep reminding myself that you can’t do everything.
That’s all for now! Thanks for reading and make sure you’re following me and my tiny business on Instagram!
